It was the location that drew Greg and Anita to this property backing onto Toohey Forest. Originally they had planned to build a completely new home on the block, but we proposed a renovation that retained key features of the old house – like an old barn door they both loved – while also creating new indoor and outdoor living spaces.
A tower adds scale to the single-level home and floods the living spaces with natural light that moves throughout the day. That means there is always a spot for a morning coffee in the sun, or a shady spot for warm summer afternoons.
The approach was informed by Greg and Anita’s vision of creating multiple living zones that can become breakout spaces for the kids when they become teenagers in need of independence. For now, the family’s favourite spot is a step in the middle of the home where they can huddle together and hang out – moments that will be all the more special when the kids are no longer so small and cuddly.
